Boston’s South End: A Culinary Destination
Myers + Chang

The South End has become the sort of foodie destination where restaurants are known as much by their star chef’s names as by the name on the sign above the door. Chefs with unique visions, strong local and global followings, and a knack for redefining the dining experience have changed the culinary landscape, and now the residents of the South End condos at 100 Shawmut can dine on some of the most notable menus in the world just steps away from home.

Myers + Chang is the sort of place that makes restaurant critics like Dan Secatore of The Infatuation invent new categories of restaurant greatness: as he writes, “It’s a lot of flavors bumping up against each other in a tiny dining room—the result of which is Boston’s best-smelling restaurant. This is an assertion we’re confident making because, until we walked in here, we’d never once considered who deserved that title.” He also rhapsodizes about the experience of a night at Myers + Chang itself, which turns eating well into a creative odyssey—and, in this case, an experience that is as nourishing as it is entertaining.

Created by husband and wife team Joanne Chang and Christopher Myers as an Asian diner, it boasts a menu that is full of unexpected dishes that turn patrons into diehard converts as soon as the food makes it to their mouths. Untraditional scallion pancakes are made with focaccia bread, and udon noodles are seared in a flaming wok. It’s no wonder the ethos behind this colorful restaurant has spawned such a following, not to mention a beloved cookbook and a take and make menu that means patrons can feast on hot and sour soup in their pajamas.

Where Myers + Chang reimagines Asian cooking with a casual diner twist, Oishii elevates a typical Japanese menu with dishes that are like works of art. Owner and chef Ting Yen makes sure the best possible ingredients are showcased in dishes like wagyu beef cooked on a stone at the table or duck sautéed in rhododendron honey sake and served inside an apple. Other delights include escargot tempura and specialty maki like the White Tiger, featuring tuna, white nori, and wasabi lemon aioli.

Jeff Gates’s Brasserie serves classic French fare sourced from the fields and waters of Massachusetts, best embodied by the croissant lobster roll embraced by both diners and critics. Choices range from duck a l’orange and Nantucket Bay scallops to French onion soup, with the best of France and New England mingling on the palate.

For a pure New England experience, the fish and chips or local favorites like Parmesan garlic fries and crispy calamari are on tap at The Buttery. At Barcelona Wine Bar, patrons can lose themselves in a tapas and wine menu so extensive they’ll want to become regulars so they can taste everything from the patatas bravas to the house-made ricotta. Pairing the meal with a 2020 Menade from Rueda, Spain, means that fortunate residents of the luxury Boston residences at 100 Shawmut can carry that belly-warming sated feeling back to a home where the views are as beautiful as the neighborhood cuisine is delicious.
